How the Index is built.
Life, Legally. is an educational instrument, not a legal assessment. Everything about how it works is published here so the result can be read honestly.
The six dimensions
- Home. Where you live, and how that is recorded.
- Family. The people who depend on you, and who you depend on.
- Work. The terms you work under, written down.
- Future. Decisions made now, for a later that may arrive quietly.
- Digital Life. The accounts, assets and access that only exist online.
- Personal Security. Everyday habits that keep your identity and money yours.
Question set and branching
The full bank contains 18 questions. You only see the ones relevant to the profile you describe — renting, employment status, caring for children and similar factors open or close specific questions. Questions you never see are excluded entirely.

Each question carries a weight reflecting how consequential the arrangement typically is. A dimension score is the weighted mean of its answered questions; the overall Index is the weighted mean across all answered questions. "Not relevant" answers are removed from the denominator rather than scored as zero.
Bands
- 80–100Well prepared. Most of the groundwork is already in place.
- 60–79Good foundations. Solid in places, with a few areas worth revisiting.
- 40–59Some important gaps. A handful of arrangements may deserve attention.
- 0–39A useful place to begin. There is a clear, manageable starting point.
Anonymity and aggregation
Public figures are only published where a group contains at least 20 participants. Below that threshold, the cell is suppressed rather than rounded. Names, email addresses, telephone numbers and full postcodes are never used in aggregate statistics — only the outward part of a postcode, region and age band.
Demonstration data
To make the index legible on day one, a clearly-flagged set of demonstration records may be included. Wherever demonstration data contributes to a figure, the page says so.
